What Happens If I Don’t Have Car Insurance?

Life is expensive.  With the increasing costs of living, high gas costs, car insurance feels like an unwelcome financial burden.  However, car insurance is an essential part of life expenses.  It is actually a legal requirement in the United States to have car insurance if you want to driver.

This does not stop a large number of people who still drive without car insurance.  Here are the consequences for driving without car insurance.

Penalties

The penalties for driving without insurance are:

  • Tickets and fees for failing to provide proof of insurance
  • License suspension
  • License reinstatement fees
  • Having your vehicle impounded
  • SR-22 requirements
  • Potential jail time

For a first time offender, you will receive a hefty fine.  If you are a repeated offender, the severity of your punishment will increase.  In some cases, if you end up in court the judge may take away your license.

Your car

If you are driving without insurance, the cops have the right to take away your car.  You can get your car back once you have paid a fee and proved that you have car insurance.

The law maintains that even if you are not driving a car and it is sitting in your garage, it must have insurance. The legislation called Compensation Insurance Enforcement enforces this law.
