5 Materials To Consider For Garage Doors

If your garage door is old and just looks drab, you may want to look into a garage door renovation.  After all,  your garage door is an important part of the curb appeal of your house.  These days, there are many garage door styles to match the style of your home. These styles also include the garage door material. There are five types of material available for garage doors. They are:

Wood

Wood garage doors are the most expensive and have the most design options.  The wooden garage doors are  built with layers. This helps prevent warping of the garage. Types of wood used are redwood, fir, cedar and meranti.  Wood doors can be factory stained or painted on site.

There are also composite wood garage doors.  They typically have a wood frame which is covered in sheets of fiberboard.  The core is filled with polystyrene insulation.

Steel

To have the best type of steel garage doors, you need to have two layers of galvanized steel.  The surface should be either primed and painted with a tough topcoat finish or clad with composite material.  The steel garage doors can be painted any color.  In addition, they are available with or without insulation.  The drawback of steel garage doors is that they can dent and corrode.

Aluminum

Aluminum garage doors do not rust; however, they do dent easily.  You can find aluminum garage doors in many different colors and in contemporary brushed finishes.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass can mimic any kind of material and is malleable.  To make a garage door of fiberglass, two layers of fiberglass are bonded to a steel frame and filled with polyurethane insulation.  They can be easily customized and they are great for all types of locations.  The drawback is that fiberglass may yellow over time and can break upon impact.

Vinyl

Vinyl doors are called the “child proof” garage doors since they are extremely difficult to dent or break.  They are mostly built on steel frames that are filled with polyurethane insulation.  They resemble fiberglass doors in appearance.  They are a lot like fiberglass in their structure, but they are stronger.  The only disadvantage is that vinyl garage doors are not available in many color options.

All five of these garage door material options  have their pros and cons.  In order to pick the right garage door for your home, you should first look at the overall style and location of your home.  This will allow you to visualize what type of garage door best fits your home.  This will help you narrow down your material choices.
