A migraine is known as a form of headache that triggers serious pains on a particular part of the brain. This pain is severe and can be felt for over 3 days.  Other symptoms often surface with migraines and some are blurred vision, lightheadedness and nausea. Research shows that 12% of Americans suffer from these headaches.

What causes migraines?

Experts are not sure about the cause of migraine but there are some findings about certain elements related to it.

Intense heat, changes in barometric pressure, bright lights, lack of sleep, hormonal changes and meal skipping can trigger migraine. There are certain cooking ingredients and food additives that cause migraine. Smoked food, chicken livers, pizza, alcohol and potato chips are food that activates migraine in people. These triggers vary from one person to another which is why medical experts advise a journal for headache. This can give them a clue of what causes migraines.

Why is migraine a risk?

It can happen to anyone at any stage in life either at early stages in life or adulthood, it begins at any age. Women develop migraine more than men and it is also hereditary.

Migraine symptoms

In almost all cases, migraine gives signs before it comes and again these signs vary from person to person, so give important attention to your head when these signs are felt. These symptoms begin two days before migraine starts.

The general symptoms are fatigue, irritability, frequent yawning, hyperactivity and depression. An estimated 30 to 50 persons get the migraine aura before the migraine itself appears. Having difficulty speaking, flashes of light in the eyes and transient vision loss are the aura. There might also be tingling sensation in the arms and legs.

A migraine attack might bring along painful throbbing sensation, increased sensitivity to light and sound, even vomiting. These symptoms may still linger hours after migraine is gone. This is known as post-drone phase. Dizziness, moodiness and confusion are also likely to be experienced during migraine.

Effects of migraine

Migraine is associated with a couple of negative effects. Some people experience migraines for almost half a month, this disables their daily activities for several days and migraine drugs also come with negative side effects.

How to diagnose a migraine

An ordinary doctor would give a referral to see a neurologist if you suffer a migraine and the neurologist will seek a blood test to verify if there is an infection or a poison in your system.

The neurologists may also want you to go for a resonance image magnetic test to give images of the brain and blood vessel.

The neurologist may also request for a computerized tomography or CT, scan. They create an image of the brain and also detect bleedings, brain damage or tumors.

Treatments for migraines

It is generally recommended than pain relief administered to people with migraines. Triptans is a popular pain relieve for migraine. They block the pathway pains and restrict blood vessels in the brain.

Ergots can also be used as medications for migraine though it is not as effective as triptans but they work perfectly if used at the beginning of the migraine.

Anti-nausea can also be used because of the nausea.

In addition to all this, glucocorticoids are also used. They are very effective but cannot be used for too long because of their stern after effects.

Self-medications for migraine

Migraines can be taken care of at home through using pain reliefs or massaging the part of the head where the pain is being felt.

Placing a damp piece of cloth across the head reduces the pain. But you should take note of what caused the migraine and try as much you can to stay away from them.

Is there an alternative treatment for migraines?

Of course, there are other options to explore to get rid of migraine.

Acupuncture helps in reducing and relieving the pains. Several disposal needles are used to relieve various pressure points.

Massage therapy is also a very effective method for getting rid of migraine. Since tense muscles also causes migraine, massage is a very effective and quick fix to migraine.

Coenzymes Q10 supplements also has the ability to reduce the frequent occurrence of migraine, though no tangible study and report have been made on its effectiveness.

Stopping migraine in its tracks

Since the major cause of migraine is from food and beverage, you should be careful what goes into the body through the mouth. Maintain a good eating habit and ensure that the body is not unnecessarily stressed. Also try as much as you can to rest.

Caffeine can also trigger a migraine so its usage should be reduced to the barest minimum
